This was supposed to be a quick Part II. A week after Alex & Negin’s rainy Tokyo couple shoot, we had another session lined up in Hong Kong. Same couple, another city, a little continuation of their travels. But on the day itself, Alex was feeling under the weather, and our couple shoot became an evening of solo travel portraits for Negin.
Quite the change of scene in a week. Tokyo had us photographing under umbrellas in the rain; Hong Kong that October was warm enough for Negin to walk around in a white shirt, jacket entirely optional. So there we were: Negin, me, and Central going about its business.
There’s a particular pleasure in making portraits somewhere this busy. Double-decker buses sweep through the background, pedestrians pass close to the lens, and a tram briefly fills almost the entire frame. Along the Central–Mid-Levels escalators, the railings and overhead lights draw you into the crowd. Negin stays still for a moment, and all that movement becomes part of the photograph.
The colors shift with the surroundings, too: yellow buses, the cool blue of a tram-stop advertisement, then the green and orange glow outside Lin Heung Tea House. Red taxis and brake lights add their own contributions. Very generous of Hong Kong, hehe. Across the set, I love how her white shirt catches those changing colors, a small visual thread through the traffic, shopfronts, and evening crowds.
Our little continuation took a turn. And Negin came away with a chapter of Hong Kong to herself.
